We recently got a call from a homeowner — let’s call him Mark — about a strange problem in his older kitchen. He’d plugged something in, saw a spark, and suddenly one outlet was completely dead. The weird part? Another outlet on the same breaker was still working just fine.

Mark had some basic electrical experience. He’d already shut off the breaker, replaced the outlet with a commercial-grade receptacle, and double-checked his connections. Still no power at that one location, while the outlet across the gas stove — on the same circuit — worked like nothing ever happened.

He told us the home was older, but the wiring was Romex, and he suspected the real problem was hiding somewhere in the wall behind the gas stove. He’d even heard of something called a “heat fuse” in wire nuts and wondered if that might be the culprit.

This kind of situation is more common than you might think, and it’s a good example of how we safely diagnose and repair hidden wiring issues when a single outlet fails after a spark.

What That Spark Really Tells Us

A visible spark when you plug something in usually means there was a brief arc — electricity jumping across a small gap. That can happen for a few reasons:

  • Loose or worn contacts inside the receptacle
  • Plug blades not making solid contact (old or damaged plug)
  • Internal failure in the device being plugged in
  • Damaged or loose wiring on the back of the outlet

In Mark’s case, the spark was followed by the outlet going completely dead, even after replacing it. That tells us the problem likely isn’t the new receptacle itself — it’s either:

  • a loss of power feeding into that box, or
  • a hidden damaged connection in the cable or a junction box upstream.

And because the other outlet on the same breaker still worked, we knew the breaker and at least part of the circuit were okay. The failure was somewhere between the working outlet and the dead one.

“Heat Fuses” and Hidden Connections: What’s Really Going On

Mark mentioned he’d heard of a “heat fuse” in wire nuts. There isn’t a normal household component that works exactly like that, but there are a few things that can act like a weak link when they overheat:

  • Backstabbed connections (wires pushed into spring holes on the back of outlets) that loosen and burn
  • Poorly twisted wires under a wirenut that arc and eventually separate
  • Old splices done outside a box or without proper strain relief
  • Damaged Romex pinched behind cabinets or appliances

When these overheat, they can effectively “open” the circuit at that point. The breaker doesn’t always trip, because once the conductor burns away, there’s no longer a path for current — so it looks like a normal open circuit, not an overload.

That’s likely what was going on in the wall behind Mark’s gas stove: a failed splice or damaged section of cable between the two outlets.

Why One Outlet on the Circuit Works and the Other Doesn’t

Homeowners are often surprised when one outlet on a circuit works and another doesn’t. In most homes, outlets are wired in what’s called a “daisy chain”:

  • Power leaves the panel and goes to the first outlet or junction box.
  • From there, a cable runs to the next box, and so on.

If a connection fails in the middle of that chain — for example, in a box hidden behind a stove or in a damaged section of Romex — everything “downstream” goes dead, but anything “upstream” still works normally.

In our caller’s kitchen, the working outlet near the stove was probably before the problem area, and the dead outlet was after it. That’s why the breaker label (number 8 in his case) and the working outlet didn’t tell the whole story.

How We Safely Diagnose a Dead Outlet After a Spark

When we come out to a home for this kind of issue, here’s the general process we follow:

  1. Confirm the basics
    We verify the problem outlet is truly dead, test the breaker, and check for any tripped GFCIs (including ones hidden behind appliances or under cabinets).
  2. Map the circuit
    We identify every outlet, light, and device on that breaker. This helps us figure out what’s likely upstream and downstream from the dead outlet.
  3. Test for power at the box
    With the power safely off, we pull the outlet from the wall and inspect the box: look for heat damage, loose conductors, and verify whether there is actually a feed cable present.
  4. Trace the feed
    If there’s no power entering that box, we look upstream — often the nearest working outlet or a junction box hidden behind a stove, inside a cabinet, or in the basement/attic.
  5. Open suspect junction points
    We carefully move appliances like gas stoves, shut off gas if needed, and open any accessible junction boxes to inspect splices, wirenuts, and cable jackets.
  6. Repair and secure
    Once we find the failure (burned wirenut, broken conductor, melted backstab, etc.), we make a proper splice in a listed box with wirenuts or connectors, secure the cable, and test everything thoroughly.

Often, by the time we’ve finished troubleshooting, the fix itself is already done — but we still take the extra step to test the entire circuit, not just the one outlet.

Why This Isn’t a DIY Job Behind a Gas Stove

Mark was understandably nervous about pulling out his gas stove and digging into the wall, and that hesitation was actually smart. There are a few layers of risk here:

  • Gas lines that can be damaged or loosened when moving the appliance
  • Hidden junction boxes that may not be up to code
  • Working in a confined space where a mistake could cause arcing near combustible materials

On top of that, older homes can have a mix of wiring methods — even if some of it is newer Romex — and previous “repairs” hidden behind drywall or posters (like in Mark’s case) can complicate things fast.

If you ever see a spark and then lose power at one outlet, especially in a kitchen or bathroom, it’s worth bringing in a licensed electrician to make sure there isn’t a larger safety issue hiding in the wall.

What You Can Safely Check Before Calling

There are a few simple things homeowners can check without opening walls:

  • Make sure the breaker is fully reset (flip it firmly off, then back on).
  • Press RESET on any GFCI outlets in the kitchen, bathroom, garage, and even outside.
  • Unplug anything that caused a spark and don’t reuse it until it’s checked.
  • Look for signs of heat at the outlet: discoloration, melting, or a burnt smell. If you see any, leave the breaker off and call a pro.

If those steps don’t bring the outlet back, the problem is likely in the wiring or a hidden junction — that’s when it’s time for us to come out, troubleshoot, and repair it safely.
