Adding an Outlet in a Closet: What Really Happens

We recently got a call from a customer — let’s call her Laura — who had a simple-sounding request: “I need to have an outlet added into a master closet.” It was a new build, and she’d already noticed there was an outlet on the other side of the closet wall, so she was hoping it would be an easy job.

That’s a call we get a lot. A homeowner wants an outlet in a closet for things like a cordless vacuum, an iron, a steamer, or even a small safe. From the outside it sounds straightforward, but there are a few important details that determine how involved (and how expensive) the project will be — especially whether we have to cut into the drywall.

When Adding a Closet Outlet Is a Simple Job

On the phone with Laura, I asked where the existing outlet was located. She told me it was right on the other side of the closet wall. That’s usually the best-case scenario.

Here’s why: walls are framed in “bays,” which are the spaces between two studs. If the existing outlet and the new closet outlet can sit back-to-back in the same stud bay, we can typically:

  • Turn off power to that circuit
  • Remove the existing outlet from its box
  • Fish a new cable through the same bay to the closet side
  • Cut a matching opening in the closet drywall
  • Install an old-work (remodel) box and your new receptacle

In many cases, this means no additional drywall cutting beyond the new box opening itself. The work stays inside the stud bay, and we don’t have to drill through studs or patch larger openings. That’s what we were hoping for with Laura’s project.

When We Have to Cut Drywall and Drill Studs

Sometimes, though, that nice back-to-back scenario doesn’t line up. If the outlet you’re trying to tap into is in the next stud bay over from where you want the closet outlet, we have to get more creative.

As I explained to Laura on the phone, if the outlets don’t share the same bay:

  • We may need to drill through one or more studs to run new cable
  • That usually means we have to open up drywall enough to access those studs
  • We route the wire, secure it to meet code, then patch the drywall afterward

This doesn’t mean the job becomes huge, but it does add labor and sometimes an extra visit if you’d like the drywall finished and painted. In our estimate to Laura, we gave a price for the “easy” scenario and explained that if we had to cut and patch drywall, the cost would increase to cover that extra work.

Typical Costs for Adding an Outlet in a Closet

Every home is different, but here’s a realistic range we see for this kind of project in a modern house:

  • Simple same-bay install (minimal drywall work): Often in the ballpark of a couple hundred dollars, similar to what we discussed with Laura for a straightforward same-day install.
  • More complex run (cutting drywall and drilling studs): Expect the price to climb to cover extra labor, materials, and any drywall repair.
  • Very tricky layouts: If the closet is far from any existing power source, or we need to run a new circuit from the panel, the cost can be significantly higher.

We always like to give a clear expectation based on what we can tell from your description, then confirm pricing once we’re on site and see what’s inside the walls.

Permits, Inspections, and Code Requirements

A question we get a lot, but Laura didn’t ask (many people don’t), is: “Do I need a permit to add one outlet?” The answer depends on your local jurisdiction, but here are some general guidelines:

  • Permits: Many areas require a permit for any new circuit or receptacle addition, even a single outlet. As licensed electricians, we’re responsible for following those rules and pulling permits when needed.
  • Inspections: If a permit is required, an inspector may want to see that the cable routing, box fill, grounding, and breaker protection all meet current code.
  • GFCI/AFCI protection: Depending on the room and the age of your home, the new outlet may need GFCI or AFCI protection, or both, which can affect how we tie into the existing circuit.

Another factor we look at is the load on the existing circuit. If that bedroom or closet circuit is already near its safe capacity, it may not be wise to add more devices to it. Part of our job is checking the panel, labeling, and actual usage so we’re not putting you at risk of nuisance tripping or overheating wiring down the road.

Common Mistakes Homeowners Make

Because a closet outlet feels “small,” many homeowners are tempted to tackle it themselves. Here are a few of the problems we see when we’re called in after a DIY attempt:

  • Overfilling the existing box: Trying to cram extra wires into a box that’s already at its limit, which violates code and can be a fire hazard.
  • Not protecting the cable: Running cable through studs without nail plates or leaving it loose in the wall, where it can be damaged.
  • Incorrect splices: Using the wrong connectors, back-stabbing devices, or mixing aluminum and copper conductors improperly.
  • No permit or inspection: Which can come back to haunt you during a home sale or insurance claim.

We completely understand wanting to save some money, but hidden electrical work is one area where mistakes can stay invisible until something goes very wrong.

DIY vs. Hiring a Pro: A Quick Checklist

If you’re debating whether to call us for your closet outlet, here’s a simple way to think about it.

You might DIY if:

  • You’re experienced with residential wiring and local electrical code
  • You know how to calculate box fill and circuit load
  • You’re comfortable cutting and patching drywall neatly
  • You’ve confirmed permit and inspection requirements

You should strongly consider a licensed electrician if:

  • You’re not sure what circuit you’re tapping into
  • You don’t know how many devices are already on that circuit
  • You’re unsure about GFCI/AFCI or code requirements for your area
  • You want a clean, warrantied job that passes inspection
